MEMORIAL DAY 2012: MAY 26 & 27, 2012

The Isolated Graves

Eight soldiers and aviators who fought and died with the American armed forces in the First and Second World Wars are buried in Belgium outside of the three American military cemeteries. AOMDA honors their sacrifice, too.

The three isolated burials from the First World War are:

Sergeant
David Stanley Beattie

Private First
Class Harry A. King

First Lieutenant
James A. Pigue

The five isolated burials from the Second World War are:

Private First Class
Joseph G. Farina

Second Lieutenant
Robert L. Garrett

Second Lieutenant
Gilbert A. Malrait

Staff Sergeant
Gerald E. Sorenson

First Lieutenant
Donald West

Each year, during Memorial Day weekend, AOMDA conducts a small ceremony at each of these graves. The schedule of these ceremonies during Memorial Day weekend can be found here.

In addition to these eight men, hundreds of Americans who fought and died while fighting with British and Commonwealth armed forces in both world wars are also buried in Belgium.
