Do the Memorial Day Ceremonies take place on Memorial Day?
In Belgium, American Memorial Day is not a public holiday. (The Belgian equivalent is Armistice Day on 11 November.) That is why Memorial Day ceremonies at the three American cemeteries in Belgium are held on the Saturday and Sunday of Memorial Day weekend each year. Some ceremonies at held at isolated graves are held on Memorial Day itself.
Is there an admission fee for Memorial Day ceremonies?
No. Memorial Day ceremonies are free-of-charge and open to all. We hope you will join us.
Is there a dress code for Memorial Day ceremonies?
There is no dress code per se. However, the honored guests wear professional business attire and the military wears its Class A uniforms. Attendees should dress in a fashion that is respectful of the solemnity of the ceremonies.
How old is AOMDA Belgium?
AOMDA Belgium dates to 1923.
How can I join AOMDA Belgium?
AOMDA Belgium consists of representatives of the United States Embassy to the Kingdom of Belgium, representatives of the American Battle Monuments Commission, representatives of the US Army Garrisons in Belgium, and private American and Belgian citizens representing the the AOMDA Foundation. It does not have members as individuals per se. However, if you believe in our mission and wish to support our work, you can become a Friend of AOMDA to receive periodic updates. You can also make a donation to the AOMDA Foundation (US or Belgium).
Is my donation tax deductible?
Not yet, but the AOMDA Foundation in the United States has applied to the Internal Revenue Service for tax deductible status.
I have a relative who fought in one of the world wars. How can I find out more about where in Belgium he might be buried?
If the relative is buried abroad, start with the website of the American Battle Monuments Commission and click the relevant link under "Search ABMC Databases.”
