Visitez un des nombreux musées qui animent le passé, ou explorez la compagne pour trouver les mémoriaux et les monuments intéressants. Il y a des dizaines de musées consacrés à la première et à la deuxième guerres mondiales en Belgique. Vous trouverez ci-dessous quelques recommandations et une liste des monuments et mémoriaux.

The Bastogne Barracks is located at the site where General McAuliffe had his headquarters during the Battle of the Bulge.  You can visit the actual room where the famous Christmas dinner took place, and where McAullife uttered the word "NUTS!".  The site also contains one of the most impressive collections of WWII military vehicles ever assembled.  The site is owned and maintained by the Belgian military.  Visit their website to book a tour!

Kazerne Dossin was a former Belgian military barracks that the Nazis used as a concentration point for Jews before sending them to the death camps in Eastern Europe. It tells the story of what happened to the Jewish citizens of Belgium in WWII, and holocaust.

The battle of Passchendaele raged outside of Ieper from June to November 1917. Over 300,000 soldiers of the British Empire and over 260,000 Germans were casualties of this terrible battle. The Memorial Museum Paesschendaele tells their story in the broader context of the broader history of the fighting around Ieper during WWII.  It includes reconstructed trenches and dugouts to help the visitor "feel" what the war was like for the men who served and died there.  It also includes an "America House" highlighting the American contribution in WWI and an American section in the "poppy garden."

Located in Bütgenbach, the Belgian Army runs the Truschbaum Museum, and it is located on a Belgian army base. It tells the story of Camp Elsenborn. One part of this story is the struggle for the Elsenborn ridge during the Battle of the Bulge in which the "battle babies” of the 99th US Infantry Division distinguished themselves.

101st Airborn Museum

The 101st Airborn Division Museum is located in a historic building in the center of Bastogne.  It not only tells tells the story of the 101st Airborne Division and the other units that fought in and around Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge, but it also gives a sense of what life was like for the civilians who lived in their basements while the battle raged above them.

The Remember Museum 39-45 museum is owned and run by Marcel and Mathilde Schmetz as their tribute to the Americans who liberated them. Dozens of American veterans have donated items to the museum, and Marcel and Mathilde keep their memory alive. It is located at les Bèolies 4, 4890 Thimister-Clermont, not far from the Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery.  The museum's opening hours are limited, so check their website for more information.

The Museum Hooge Crater is on a site where extensive mine warfare took place. In addition to explaining mine warfare, the museum has an interesting collection of weapons and vehicles from the war, including a German tri-plane.

Located on the Belgian coast just outside of Oostende, Atlantikwall Museum is a preserved section of the Nazi fortifications that ran along the coast of Belgium and France to defend against the invasion that eventually came at Normandy on D-Day.

The Baugnez 44 Historical Centre is an excellent commercial museum located near the site of the Nazi Massacre of American POW’s in December of 1944 during the Battle of the Bulge. It tells the story of the war from the perspective of both the soldiers and the civilians in Belgium via an informative audio guide. You will learn a lot from visiting this museum.

Ohio Bridge

On 4 November 2018, the US 37th Infantry Division pushed across the River Scheldt, puncturing one of of the German Army's last lines of defense.  Since the soldiers of the "Buckeye Division" were mostly from Ohio, this bridge was built in their honor when it was reconstructed following the war.
