Richard B. Anderson was born in Oil City, Pennsylvania on 13 March 1915.  He was the son of Albert and Audrey C. Anderson.  He had two brothers Robert and Jack.  (Robert also served in the USAAF.)  He also had a sister named Mary.  Richard grew up in Olean, Pennsylvania where he attended school and was a member of the First Baptist Church.  Prior to the war, he was employed as a mechanic at Steffen Field, near Buffalo.  He enlisted in the US Army Air Forces I November 1940, and was shipped to Europe in May of 1944. He was assigned to the 856th Bomber Squadron of the 492nd Bomber Group and was a flight engineer on a B-24 Liberator.  He was killed when his aircraft was shot down over Germany on 20 June 1944.
