Whitney Waldo Bangs graduated from the St. Paul’s School in New York in 1943, where he was active in a number of different clubs.  His school described him as a “quiet and pleasant boy, imperturbable, genuine, very friendly, a steady worker with much more influence than he ever knew.”  He joined the Army after graduation and shipped to Europe in August of 1944 where he was assigned to Company B of the 301st Infantry Regiment of the 94th Infantry Division.  He was wounded in November but returned to his unit.  On 19 January, his company was surrounded by the 11th Panzer Division in Orscholz, Germany.  They held on for three days under direct enemy fire, and then surrendered on 21 January.  He died on 5 March 1945 in a German Prisoner of War camp. His brother Francis N. Bangs also graduated from the same school in 1940 and died during the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium.  The brothers are buried together side-by-side at the Henri Chapelle American Cemetery
