Charles (Charlie) P. Barns was born in Nash County (near Nashville), North Carolina, USA on 25 February 1893.  He was the first child of Joseph Francis Barnes and Alice Jordan Williams. He had eight brothers and sisters (Minnie, Osmon, Viola, Rob, Louis, Lillie, Marie and Kate). In the family Bible, he name was listed as Charlie Murden Barnes. He was a carpenter at the time of his draft, but he grew up working on the family farm.  He joined the service on 3 May 1918.  He was Killed in Action in Belgium one week before the Armistice
