Jennings C. Greuter was born in 1923.  According to the 1930 US Census, his family lived in Defiance City, Ohio.  Jennings married Alies S. Greuter, and they had a son named Lawrence.  Jennings, Alies, and Lawrence were living in Hicksville, Ohio when Jennings entered the service.

Jennings became a tail gunner on a B-17 of the 338 Bomb Squadron of the 96 Bomb Group (The Snetterton Falcons.)  His bomber commanded by Second Lt. Harold H. Tucker.  On 12 May, 1944, the Tucker crew was one of 26 B-17s that were sent to bomb oil refineries at Zwickau, Czechoslovakia.  While they were en route to target, German fighters attacked the Squadron at 12.10.  At 12.24, they attacked a second time.  Tucker’s B-17 was hit in the nose section, and broke into flames.  Five of the crew members were able to bail out and became Prisoners of War.  However, Jennings and the four officers on board were unable to escape.  The bomber crashed at Usingen, Germany.  The mission was one of the darkest days in the 96th Bomb group’s history.  Twelve of the 26 bombers that participated never returned.
