Harry F. Kested was born in Poland, New York, on January 20, 1919. He was the son of Ernest and Myrtle Fannie Kested. He had three sisters.  In his years after school and before he joined the ranks, Harry was employed as a technician before he joined the Army.  Harry was the radio operator of an M8 Greyhound, a light armored vehicle used principally for reconnaissance and idenfication of the enemy.  It was part of the 83rd Reconnaissance Battalion of the 3rd Armored Division.
On 11 September 1944 at about 12.45 pm, the 83rd Reconnaissance Battalion entered the town of Baelen-Membach in Belgium, which was occupied by German soldiers of the Panzer-Brigade 105.  Conley’s M8 was the third vehicle in the American column, as it encountered a German Panzer tank.  The M8 took a direct hit and exploded.  Harry was killed instantly.  The M8’s Commander, Bradford Conley, is also buried at the Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery.
