Albert Gustav Magnuson was born 22 October 1892 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was the son of Gustav Magnuson and Augusta (Svenson) Magnuson, who were Swedish immigrants. The Magnuson family lived in Minneapolis and then moved to Madison, Lac Qui Parle County, Minnesota. In 1902, Albert’s parents bought and then operated a dairy farm near Rossburg, Aitken County, Minnesota. In June 1918, Albert was drafted into the United States Army. He did his basic training at Camp Grant near Rockford, Illinois. In July/August, he was assigned to Company D, 344th infantry regiment, 86th Division (the Blackhawk Division). His unit arrived in France in September 24. The men received additional training. In October, Albert was transferred to Company L, 148th infantry regiment, 37th Division (the Buckeye Division). Also, in October 1918, the 37th and 91st Divisions were sent north into Belgium to push the Germans out of Belgium. On October 31, the 37th Division moved out of their trenches and attacked the Germans. By November 1, the Germans had retreated across the Scheldt (Escaut) River. On November 2, Private Albert Gustav Magnuson was killed in action while crossing the Scheldt River. His remains were never found. He is listed on the Tablets of the Missing in the Chapel at the Flanders Field American Cemetery and Memorial in Waregem, Belgium.
