US Army Air Force Staff Sergeant Gerald E. Sorensen was shot down over Belgium in May of 1944. He was found by the Belgian Resistance, and sheltered in the home of the Abeels family who were active in the Resistance. Sorensen continued to fight the war as a member of the Resistance, an died side-by-side with his Belgian "brother" Roger Abeels.
