Patrick J. Hoey was born in Flushing, on Long Island in New York.  He had two brothers, and three sisters.  It appears that he was from a devout Catholic family, since one his brothers joined a Cistercian Monastery and two of his sisters became nuns.  He attended school in Elmhurst.  When Patrick was 15, both of his parents died, and he went to live with his aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. David Hoey of 18 Prospect Street in Belleville, New Jersey.  Before the war, he worked for the Hearns Department Store in Newark, New Jersey. 

Patrick joined the service in January of 1941 and was assigned to the 60th Infantry Regiment of the 9th Infantry Division.  On 23 March 1943, he was wounded in action in Tunisia and was awarded the French Legion of Merit for his refusal to leave his gun position until it was properly manned to face an attack.  July 1944 found him in Normandy when he was again wounded in action that would earn him the Bronze Star.  On 12 December he earned the Silver Star in combat in Germany.  Two days later, 14 December, he was Killed in Action at the age of 25.
