George Pliny Allen served on a B-24 Liberator that was nicknamed Hell’s Wench (#42-40994.)  It was part of the 328thBomber Squadron of the 93rd Bomber Group.  On 1 August 1943, the Hell’s Wench was participating in Operation Tidal Wave to bomb oil refineries near Ploiesti, Romania.  On the approach to the target, both of its wings were struck by anti-aircraft artillery.  The Hell’s Wench caught fire and exploded, killing everyone on board.  As the linked article reveals, Pliny had a sister named Barbara there is a walkway named for him.
