Roy L Grant was born on 21 August 1921.  He was the son of Mrs. Anna Grant Mackey who appears to have been a Native American from the Choctaw Tribe according to the 1930 Census.  He grew up in Durant, Oklahoma.  He was a member of the Baptist Church, and he graduated from the Durant High School.  In January of 1942, he graduated from the Southeastern State College, and he joined the US Army Air Forces on 5 January 1942.  Roy shipped to Europe in 1943, and served as a Bombardier on a B-17 that was under the command of Lt. Frank E Upson.  On 30 January 1944, the bomber was on a mission to Brunswick, Gemrany.  It was attacked by enemy fighters just short of the target, and crashed at Holsen, Germany.  It was Roy’s 13th mission.  Edwin C. Hake, copilot of the bomber, and Hubert L. Crook, the left-waist gunner, are buried at the Ardennes American Cemetery.  His brother Floyd Grant was also died during the war and is also buried at the Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery.
