Bradford Stewart Conley was born in Burke County, North Carolina on November 14, 1922.  He was the son of James Claude Conley and Emma Katherine Whetstine-Conley. Before joining the Army, he worked as a surveyor.  Bradford was the Commander of an M8 Greyhound, a light armored vehicle used principally for reconnaissance and idenfication of the enemy.  It was part of the 83rd Reconnaissance Battalion of the 3rd Armored Division. He was awarded a Silver Star for bravery in action in France on 1 August 1944.  The citation reads:

“When his company's advance was hampered by a roadblock, Sergeant Conley led his men around the block and deep into enemy territory to learn the disposition. and the strength of the enemy unit. This act was carried out under enemy mortar and machine gun fire and materially helped the task force to achieve its objective in the shortest possible time. His personal bravery, loyalty and determination have been an inspiration to his men and reflects the greatest merit to himself and the armed forces.”

On 11 September 1944 at about 12.45 pm, the 83rd Reconnaissance Battalion entered the town of Baelen-Membach in Belgium, which was occupied by German soldiers of the Panzer-Brigade 105.  Conley’s M8 was the third vehicle in the American column when it encountered a German Panzer tank.  Bradford was in the turent when the M8 took a direct hit and exploded.  Bradford was killed instantly, at the age of 22.  The M8’s radio operator, Harry Kested, is also buried at the Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery.
